When pulling the cotton plants out of the field, we found the roots of the heirloom Sea Island given by Sally @vreseis is much much longer than the normal upland.

We remember Sally told us the heirloom Sonora wheat, which she has been growing for years, has also massive roots that sequester more carbon than normal wheat. Maybe it is common to native plants?

BTW the rich and complex flavor of the Sonora wheat is unlike anything else. You should try.

畑で綿の株を引っこ抜いていたら、シーアイランドの根っこだけ異様に長かった。

そういえばサリーさんが育てているソノラ小麦という在来種も根っこが深く長く張ると言っていた。昔の植物はそうだったのだろうか？

ちなみにサリーさんソノラ小麦は普通の小麦と違った複雑で香ばしい香りがしておいしいです。サリーさんのHPで買えます。

Looking on the bright side, it is nice to see white bolls popping out after all the leaves withered.

本当はもっと早く収穫した方が雨にあたらず綿にも種にもいいのはわかっているのだが結局毎年いつまでも綿が残っている。
ただ年明けまで放っておくと葉が枯れて、白い綿が浮かび上がるように目立って見えてくるのは中々見られない景色でもある。

一富士二鷹三茄子初夢で見ると縁起

一富士二鷹三茄子

初夢で見ると縁起がいいもの。

由来は諸説あるらしく、
・富士は日本一の山、鷹は賢くて強い鳥、茄子はことを「成す」
・徳川家が治める駿河の国で高いモノの順：富士山、愛鷹山、初物の茄子の値段
・徳川家康が好んだもの：富士山、鷹狩り、初物の茄子
などなどあるようです。

In Japanese tradition, the first dream you have in the night of the new year is believed to foretell your luck in the year.
And the top 3 things that are said to bring you good luck are:
1. Mt. Fuji 2. Hawk 3. Eggplant

Mt. Fuji, the highest mountain in Japan, and hawk, a clever and powerful bird, could be easily associated with good fortune. But why eggplant?
The reason is said that the Japanese word for eggplant (nasu) can also mean "to achieve" or "to accomplish", although its exact origin is unclear.

At Mesa Farmers Gin

ドーシーさんたちが30年前に立ち上げたジン工場。

ジンとはコットンの種と綿を分離する工程。
収穫されるコットンのうち、種の重量割合は60~70%にもなる。そのため紡績に使うコットンは生産地でジンを済ませ、綿だけを圧縮梱包することで輸送効率を高めている。

Mesa Farmers Ginはドーシーさんの地域で唯一残っているジン工場。
かつてこの地域では小規模な工場が多く、人も機械も必要な割に利益が出ず、ジンは儲からないものとされていた。そこで農家たちで話し合い、協同組合としてMesaを立ち上げたという。

ドーシーさんのオーガニックコットンがジンされるのは、他農家のコンベンショナルコットンが全てジンし終わった後。オーガニック認証監査機関立会いの下、全ての機械をクリーニングした上で行われている。クリーニングには丸一日かかるという。サリーさんの茶綿・緑綿も、他の種と混ざらないようにしなければならない。こうした作業には当然追加コストがかかる。

大量に発生する種は基本的に牧場に売られ、牛の餌になる。Gin wasteではなくGin feedだよとマネージャーのアルベルトは言っていた。

Ginning is the process of separating cotton seeds from cotton.
The seeds account for 60-70% by weight. So, cotton used for spinning is ginned at the production site and only the cotton fibre is compressed and packed, which improves transport efficiency.

Mesa Farmers Gin is the only remaining gin mill around Mesilla valley, where our partner farmer Dosi grows organic cotton for us.

His organic cotton is ginned after all the conventional cotton from other farmers has been ginned. All machines are cleaned in the presence of an organic auditing organisation. The cleaning process takes a whole day. Sally’s brown and green cotton must also go through the process to prevent the seeds of different colors mixed. This additional cleaning requires additional costs.

The large quantities of seed generated are basically sold to the ranchers to feed the cattle - It is Gin feed, not Gin waste, said Alberto, the Gin manager.

3S事例　その2

【1枚目】
機械上部のダクトを掃除。ピカピカに輝いてます。

【2枚目】
部品棚の整理。どこに何がどれだけあるか一目瞭然に。

3Sを始めたきっかけは工場に来た人にキレイな工場を見てほしいからと書いたが、実際の効果はお客さんだけでなく中の人にとってもある。
（というか3Sとは本来そういうものか…）

ホコリの溜まる部分を掃除してワックスを塗れば、次からは掃除しやすくなりメンテナンス性が高まる。部品も整理しておけば「どこにあるかわからない」とか「あの人に聞かないとわからない」という事態を防ぎやすい。

短期的には仕事が増えるが、長期的に見ればだんだん仕事が減るはず。

As the benefit of 3S, the workplace efficiency improves as well as the factory becomes cleaner.

Sorting small parts will make it easier to see what, where and how many there are.

3S increases work in the short term, but should reduce work in the long term.
